Last Man In Tower by Arvind Adiga explores the evils of capitalism. Corruption and capitalism is soaring high in real-estate industry in Mumbai. Dharmen Shah, the property developer has the plans to buy Vishram society near the slum land of south Mumbai airport. He wants to redevelop the place as plush apartments. Dharmen Shah has already succeeded in growing his construction empire but getting Vishram society is not that easy. There is a middle class group of residents standing in his way. These are the people who have sentiments attached to the building and who aren’t ready to part with it. There is a blind woman who identifies the building through the touch, there is a destitute, cleaning girl who fears losing her job and then there is Yogesh Murthy, the retired teacher who has memories of his deceased wife and daughter. But sentiments fail to win the battle when money comes in to the picture. The close knit society that appeared to be united crumbles when lured with money. Most of the opponents give away the cause and accept the money that is too good to say no. Left alone is Yogesh Murthy, the last man in tower who sticks to the cause of saving his old building. Shah becomes the mouthpiece of author for capitalism, social mobility and global aspiration.
